Hi everyone !!
In the next article we will know the habitat of one of the most popular aquarium species,Poecilia reticulata better known as Guppy.
This fish has a relatively small distribution in the wild in northern South America and some Caribbean islands.
Moreover it has been introduced to an astounding number of countries (70), for various reasons, most of them for pest control mosquito which is a great devourer of larvae. He has also been introduced by aquarists in more than twenty countries both in artificial ecosystems as reservoirs and ponds, and natural waterways.
The population of Trinidad is one of the most studied in the literature and is often cited as range. That is why I selected this island for our example biotope.
Trinidad and Tobago is an island nation located off the coast of Venezuela, is composed of several islands of various size highlighting Trinidad and Tobago, the latter being the largest and most populated.
Its location on the Caribbean Sea on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other gives it a rich biodiversity in addition to varied climates.
The numbers of species found in Trinidad are amazing, especially considering its size of 4,768 km2. 3,337 species of plants, 467 birds, 100 mammals, 90 species of reptiles, 30 and 32 of amphibians, 659 species of butterflies, about 950 marine fish and 41 coral (40 of them in Buccoo Reef). Other marine species are 7 types of mangrove, 4 plants and 198 species of algae.
In what concerns us here are 44 species of aquatic plants and 50 species of freshwater fish.
As you can see is an impressive variety of fauna and flora to an island with a smaller than most provinces or communities of any European country.
Among the rivers are 2 of them slow stream 7 moderate and 9 with fast current. It is in one of the latter which is located biotope example.
In the north-central part of the island there is a mountain range that divides the different aquatic ecosystems.
From this ridge to the north and because of its high slope and short distance to the lowlands as well as to the mouth, rivers and streams run through this distance through waterfalls, lower falls, pools and small rapids through the rainforest.
The first waterfalls at the bottom make pisciviroras natural barrier to predatory species.
Thus from these waterfalls and up through the course of rivers and streams we encounter diverse populations of wild Guppy where there are just predators.
This is caused individuals within the same species living in places very close to various changes in behavior, feeding, breeding and coloration.
Aripo River is a Caroni River tributary, that after 40 km flows into the Gulf of Paria.
This river is selected because the Guppys can find other interesting species living sympatrically a killi the genus Rivulus.
This river as well as its small tributaries flow through the rain forest on a rock floor, bridging the gap with small waterfalls where before and after backwater areas where more number of individuals are generated. A dense vegetation extends around and even growing on the rocks next to the bed. Underwater vegetation are minimal and between large rocks and countless pebbles, fish seek shelter near the bottom or among marginal vegetation on the banks.
The temperature is around 23 ° C, with a pH of 7.5-8.0 and a conductivity of 381 uS.
Bridging the gap this biotope has many similarities with streams and headwaters of rivers
Cantabrian with abundant Phoxinus sp. and Salmo trutta.
After an approach to this habitat, we will see how we can move from five crystals.
The size in this case need not be very large, from 120 liters can maintain good community fish, but if we can a little more better, so you will have more room to swim this perennial species.
The way it is advisable to be lower and wider area and we will win in the background where they will spend some time both species.
For filtering will choose a filter that gives us reliability and ease of cleaning, so as to be able to generate a certain current at its output.
We must not forget that this particular biotope in which they live has a fast current.
We can also add a recirculation pump with which to generate more power and direct it where we see fit.
Also we offer areas where the current is less, when they want to stand on the bottom or near the surface.
In these environments the presence of oxygen dissolved in the water is high, so we add an oxygenator or otherwise create a surface current that breaks the air / water layer.
Depending on our location and temperature of our house will not be necessary to install a heater, typically they support a wide range of temperatures, without going to extremes obviously.
Lighting is an important factor, although these streams and rivers passing through rainforests do not get many hours of direct sunlight, in the aquarium we promote the growth of algae which these fish sting like in nature. And we should not overdo it with too much lighting, fish may have a more withdrawn behavior in captivity.
In the decoration we find similarities with other examples of aquariums, eg gobies and loaches but in this case, is another type of fish which we see inside.
Several larger rocks, or boards spaced depends more on your taste since in its biotope are both. Surrounded by pebbles of different sizes, the smallest being slightly larger than a grain of sand. Pieces of small size branches, sticks and leaves of Terminalia, Fagus Quercus complete or very similar to the decoration of these streams.
Paint the back of black or other dark to mark the appearance of closed pool color. If you like the look in the aquarium, we can install any type of rear background in relief, simulating rock and a preferably neutral color, we can do it ourselves if we are skilled or can acquire as more and more affordable and look much more realistic.
Although just find plants in the biotope, it is advisable to put some floating plants and thrive in the upper area of the aquarium such as the Ceratophyllum sp. or Ceratopteris sp.
In this case are not only recommended for its ability to filter the aquarium water and remove harmful substances, will also offer shelter to fry born sporadically in the aquarium.
Also snails as Melanoides tuberculata present in these islands, as well as Planorbis, Physa or Limnea help keep clean the bottom between the rocks of food that the fish are not consumed. They contribute also to be part of the natural nutrition they get the fish in the aquarium.
And as will be clear after this aquarium, we will see the two species that inhabit it.
The Poecilia reticulata or Guppy just need presentation, this species been maintained and reproduced by a large majority of aquarists in the world at some point in their hobby.
The wild form moreover, only to become popular with the emergence of nano aquariums and the en endler guppies. Since then it is not uncommon to find wild varieties from specialist shops.
The population of this river is maintained and reproduced by aquarists in Europe and North America so it should not cost us find her.
While the guppy is a fish that all is not well known with its wild form.
It is an omnivorous species that feeds on anything that falls in the water. He is known for his fondness for insects and their larvae usually devours algae also form an important part of their diet as well as small invertebrates or aufwuch that are on them. Likewise fruit, seeds and other plant and animal remains are pecked looking for some food.
In the aquarium we also offer a varied diet that includes live food frequently, so get to generation after generation, the offspring of these fish from the wild, keep your rich, vivid colors.
If we play with the intention of taking a numerous progeny, the most recommended option is to install a small aquarium (failing a farrowing) which separate the females who are close to giving birth and likewise the fry grow to a size that they are not considered food.
This is important because fellow aquarium feeds wild guppy fry, but only when they have a few days of life.
The Rivulus hartii, now called Anablepsoides hartii is a killi that can reach 10 cm in the wild, do not be so in aquarium which usually does not exceed 7 cm. Its distribution is in the Caribbean near the coast and preferably in basins where waterfalls are on its course. It is thanks to his leaping ability that can overcome these barriers and access to niche where it can be the dominant species.
It feeds on insects, larvae, invertebrates as well as small fish fry guppy. In places where they live sympatrically often they prey on fry with just a week to live, leaving alone other juveniles or adults.
With voracious insects it is already been seen jumping on the riparian vegetation to capture any insect standing there, an image reminiscent of those of Arowanas doing the same in the Amazon.
Its reproduction is not complicated and rolls by burying eggs in the sand or gravel bottom, so to do either between roots or vegetation if any.
Its maintenance in the aquarium is not easy and is not one of the most common among fans of these fish. Rather it is considered a species for specialists.
We must not be discouraged and if we can not find or do not dare them can opt for some other species of its kind with a similar distribution and more durable. Rivulus geayi may be a good candidate.
I hope you liked the article and you've got a little get close to this habitat or even that you think to mount a similar aquarium.
This area is well studied and is fortunately not difficult to find information and images.
For me personally this example Biotope Aquarium Upper Aripo River in Trinidad and Tobago, think i made me ride one at home.
Encourage them to answer any questions and comment, question or suggestion that you still keep on the subject.
